Do You Keep A Food Diary?
One of the best ways to ensure you stay on track with your diet plan is to keep a food diary. Do you keep one?
I have to tell you that from the very beginning of my first round with Weight Watchers, I resisted the food journal. I hated it. I thought it was pointless. It irritated me that I was supposed to write down every single thing I ate throughout the day. So one week I decided to forget it and skip the food journal.
I paid for that dearly. What I discovered that week taught me a valuable lesson that I’ve never forgotten.
Why A Food Journal Is Important
- A food journal shows you the truth about what you can’t see otherwise. One of the most important reasons for keeping a food journal is that it is a big eye-opener. When you are faithful and consistent about writing down everything you eat, you begin to realize just how much more you are eating than you might have realized. You can’t eat all those snack cakes throughout the day and dismiss them when you see it in black and white.
- A food journal helps keep you on track. A really good thing about keeping a food journal is that when you start slipping you can immediately catch yourself before it’s too far gone. If you’ve had a bad day, your food journal from a previous day will serve as a good reminder of what not to do in the future.
- A food journal teaches you how valuable lessons. One thing I’ve learned from keeping my food journal is how to control my portion sizes. I know if I take too much I’ll have to add more points to accommodate for the larger portion. Another lesson I’ve learned from my food journal is to be realistic. There will be good and bad days. I can’t beat myself up on the bad days. I just have to do better on the good days. Finally, I’ve learned to look at my journal frequently. When I’m having a moment where I’d like to snack, if I get my food journal out, I’m much less likely to cave in to that momentary weakness.
