Does Better Equal Healthier?
I have used the term “better” in some of my posts: eating better, making better food choices, better habits. This morning the thought struck me, Does better equal healthier?
For those of us who are parents, let’s consider this question with regards to our kids. If we make better choices about the foods we buy to feed our children, are those choices necessarily better?
And if you don’t have children, the same applies to you, too. If you’ve made an effort to make better food choices, have those choices necessarily been healthier?
Let me give you an example. Let’s say you’re a McDonald’s addict. Maybe you used to eat at McDonald’s 3-5 times per week. But now you’ve cut down your weekly visits to just one time. Yes, you have made a better choice by cutting back on eating so much fast food, but was it a healthy choice? You’re still eating fast food.
What if, instead, you decided to only allow yourself one visit to McDonald’s per month. Furthermore, you choose to prepare healthy, home cooked meals every evening for yourself. Better yet, you take one Saturday every two or three weeks and prepare meals that are then frozen into one-portion containers. Each of these meals can then be re-heated for lunch every day throughout the week. Now that is a healthier choice!
I’m not suggesting you go cold turkey. If you’ve had a bad habit for a long time, it will take a while to create a new habit to replace it with. It requires diligence on your part, though.
